Hatch Scales

For various reasons I was trying to hatch a 1 unit square box using the gravel hatch pattern, The scale i required for the hatch was around 0.01 (New drawing using default acltiso template). The hatch pattern looks very disjointed, if the box is 100 square and the pattern at a scale of 1 then it all looks fine.

Can anybody explain what might be causing this, I only ask out of interest since I have the look I require for my block anyway.

Relocate the box you are hatching to 0,0,0 location, then hatch again: does
it look fine?
